The overall function of this site is to serve as a cataloging of the different conifers, with photographs to aid in positive identification.
There are approximately 634 total possible species under 69 genera - which varies some by taxonomy. Conifers are part of the larger group of plants known as gymnosperms. The term gymnosperm refers to the typically open nature of the seeds produced. This is in contrast to the angiosperms or flowering plants which produce seeds enclosed in a fruit. This is, of course, a very simplistic explanation and there are many other characteristics to consider - and the man-imposed "rules" are not strictly followed by the plants. At the present, the focus of this site will be only on the conifers. This includes the Pine Family (Pinaceae, the Aurcaria Family (Araucariaceae, and the Cypress Family (Cupressaceae).
This site is a hobby site and I do not claim to be an authority of any kind. Posting the information here is a sort of note taking exercise in my own learning process. While the overall information provided here is available in books and other websites, my photos and personal notes are unique. I will be happy if other conifer enthusiasts enjoy seeing my pictures and observervations on this wonderful group of plants.
